Blackburn Hawks U18 v Nottingham 18 (2) – Div 3 North – Sat 2nd Sept 2017
Blackburn 12 Nottingham 0
The welcome return of the Nottingham 18(2) Jaguars, after a year’s absence, saw a spirited attempt to compete with Blackburn’s one and only U18 team.
Of Nottingham’s 9 players and goalie, 2 were playing their first ever game of hockey (Boultby and Catley) and 2 players were called up from the U15(2)s (Dalton and Kimber). All players were having their first experience of U18s hockey and 20 minute periods.
After conceding 7 goals in the opening 15 minutes, the team then settled and put in a remarkable performance to hold Blackburn to just 5 more goals in the remaining 45 minutes. They also went close to scoring on numerous occasions.
The main difference in the sides was two Blackburn players (Murray and Grimes) who had already broken into their U20s team last year, and who between them scored 11 of the 12 goals.
With just 3 defencemen and 6 forwards, players logged huge amounts of ice time and it is an absolute credit to them that they kept going right to the very end, conceding only 3 goals in the final period, when they were clearly extremely tired.
Thanks also go to Steve Kimber for stepping in as a coach for the day.
