Nottingham 18 (2) v Sutton Sting (2) – Div 3 North – Sun 24th Sept 2017
Nottingham 1 : Sutton 14
As games go, this was a tough one!
Sutton arrived with an experienced team of players, many of whom were used to playing at a higher level than Division 3.
The score line is a fair reflection and may have been higher still, but for the heroics of Nottingham’s Man of the Man, Summer Cramer, who stood on her head in goal and denied Sutton’s forwards time after time.
A mismatch in experience levels (and number of players) did nothing to prevent the Nottingham players showing heart and passion. Restricting a talented Sutton team to 0-3 in P1 and 1-3 in P2 is a fantastic achievement in itself and will not have gone down well with Sutton.
Tiredness eventually set in for P3 and Sutton capitalised on their superior fitness and bench strength with 8 unanswered goals.
James Beasley, Ellis Hatton (first ever game) and Arthur Merrick made their debuts for the U18(2) team, with Arthur being rewarded as the first goal scorer of the season (assisted by Callum Boultby).
The results and score lines are not relevant for this young team at this stage. Many of them have a further 3 to 4 years playing at U18s levels.
Sutton showed the standards that we will be trying to achieve in future years. Congratulations to their team on the win. There is much work to do, but everyone is still smiling.
