Match ReportNottingham 18 (2) v Grimsby Redwings U18 – Div 3 North – Sat 4th November 2017
Nottingham 7 Grimsby 4
A week after taking the points in Grimsby, the Jaguars faced the same opposition at the NIC. As expected, the larger ice at Nottingham provided a very different and much more even game.
Nottingham raced into a 2 goal lead in the first six minutes with goals from Kieran Clark and Alex Price, but this time around Grimsby fought back immediately. With Callum Boultby sitting an Elbows penalty, Grimsby scored on the power play. They went on to equalise less than a minute later, leaving the teams at 2-2 going into the break.
Kieran Clark got his second of the night to make it 3-2 shortly after the start of the Period 2 and then with Nottingham continuing to struggle with illegal use of elbows (Connor Munroe sitting out this time), Ethan Finney grabbed his debut goal, whilst short-handed.
There was, however, no let up from Grimsby and after a dominant spell, they grabbed a third goal to put the game back on a knife edge. Score after Period 2…..4-3 to Nottingham.
Past U18(2) teams have tended to run out of steam for final periods of the game, but this team is different! With both teams neutralising each other for the opening exchanges, up popped James Beasley to put some space between them with a 5-3 score line.
This was just what the team needed at a key time. Fired up and spurred on Mac Stevenson slapped in a neat pass to make it 6-3 and surely game over.
The scoring wasn’t finished yet though. As a Grimsby player sat 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct (spraying Summer with ice), Ethan Finney went ‘coast to coast’ for his second goal. A late consolation saw Grimsby’s Man of the Match also score his second goal. Final score…..7-4 win for Nottingham.
Grimsby are a strong, physical team and made a number of good, clean hits, which left several Nottingham players with their heads in this week and bodies in next week! In spite of this, team discipline remained excellent!
